But what is perceived in the current reality is great confusion about the meaning of women. Feminist movements and a major imbalance in families result in a frantic struggle for status and consequently a lot of frustration. Read in this post about the origin and importance of women in their individuality and in the context of the family as well.
Woman, Ezer Kenegdo
The woman was created by God with a very clear purpose, to be a helper to be with the man. It sounds a little simple, but in reality, it is not. The word help, in this case, is not someone who facilitates only, something optional, or in charge of inferior service. It is indispensable as God himself declared, necessary so that man is not alone.
‘Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” ‘Genesis 2:18
When God declared that it was not good for man to be alone, we understand that man’s life was not pleasant, complete as it could be. Notice that in the Garden of Eden, man enjoyed intimacy with the Creator. But something was still missing! Do you know when you finish a job but, despite being finished, a new idea comes up giving you the certainty that it can be even better, more suitable and more beautiful? It was good, but God wanted to reach the very good.
Besides that, it would not be possible for the man to live without a partner and still fulfill his purpose of living a life of satisfaction and prosperity. It is in this context that God gives that final touch to his creation.
‘The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. ‘Genesis 2:20
The Bible says that the woman was created to be the one who helped and corresponded to the man. The original Hebrew terms are Ezer Kenegado. Ezer means help or a person who helps. Kenegado indicates the position beside, together, in the company. And so God made, exactly what was necessary, a helping companion to be beside the man.
Added or taken from man?
In this way, God chose the rib on the side of the man’s body to form the woman. Confirming the idea that she should not be above or below him, the rib points to her position as a partner beside the man.
Just as he was created by God out of the dust of the earth, a woman was created from one of man’s ribs. In a way, the woman was added to the man, but it was also taken from himself. God was cutting a small piece of man to use it as raw material and add something much more valuable to it.
‘So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. ‘Genesis 2:21-22
The woman is a gift from God to the man. Even on the sixth day of creation, God surprises Adam with his first proof of love. Something unique and of great value that man could never achieve for himself. So we see that the relationship between male and female must never occur by force. Romance and the beauty of divine encounter are essential.
Devi Titus says that man was formed from the soft soil to be strong. And the woman was created from a strong bone to be soft. It also shows us how a man and a woman have elements in common while being so different.
Not better, but different
It is true that the man and the woman are quite different. In some ways totally opposite aspects. And this is very good because it manifests the beauty of true diversity.
The woman was brought up with the clear purpose of being submissive to her husband. Often the word submission is used to refer to the lower one, but that is not the case here. Submission is also different from oppression. The woman was created for a partnership in unity to achieve the God-given mission to man.
He was created to be the head, bring direction, and publicly represent the family. She was created to be a companion at his side. In other words, men and women are different, but one cannot be considered better than the other. Imagine that you are in the supermarket picking fruits and someone asks you which fruit is better banana or apple. There is no way to compare bananas and apples because the relationship between these fruits is of difference and not of quality.
So also, men and women have different designations. And they should be valued in honor so that the wife submits to her husband and the husband sacrificially loves his wife. See what the Apostle Paul said:
‘Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, ‘Ephesians 5:24-25
Modeled to be with the Man
The woman was created in a very special way and purpose. She is unique in her value. But one cannot think of the woman without mentioning the man. Just as a man cannot live well without a woman. She was formed to be with the man. And agreement in this relationship is powerful to manifest God’s perfect will on earth.
‘Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God. ‘1 Corinthians 11:11-12
God created man and woman to complete and live harmoniously. They were not created to compete with each other but to rule over all creation together. When a man and a woman understand their purposes and live based on the principles of God’s Word, many conflicts are resolved. Therefore, man and woman, love and honor each other and, thus, not only your family but every society will benefit from this wonderfully created partnership by God.
Prayer for a woman: God, thank you for the special way you created me and for your purpose for my life. Would you please teach me to live as You have planned for me? May I honor my husband and be a helper to him in his mission. I pray with faith in the name of Jesus. Amen.
