Parenting during COVID-19: Homeschooling and Somethings More

Today the State of Texas decided to keep all schools closed for the rest of the semester because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our children will miss the opportunity to be with their classmates. But they can enjoy a good time at home closer to the parents. It is a good time for us to evaluate our responsibilities in the relationship with our children as we spend more time together at home.

It’s time to take advantage of this crisis to strengthen our family and to improve attitudes and habits at home. We all are facing a kind of challenge in this time. One for many parents is homeschooling.

For some teach math, literacy, grammar is so hard, and they are counting the days for the school to come back. But for a child to grow, become educated and a great person, it takes more than the school subjects. They need to be taught values and principles of life. This is the real and big challenge for parenting.

Thinking about it, we have a question for you: Whose responsibility is it to raise a child? School? Church? Or parents?

The truth is that we, as parents, are responsible for educating, disciplining, teaching the way and giving direction to our children. This is more than school subject. And have no doubt that your child wants it! No one has greater authority than a parent over a child’s life. The school, the church, and other sources of help are just collaborators in this process.

Train up a child in the way he should go;even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Proverbs 22:6 ESV

Maybe you are thinking: “Well, in which way do I need to educate my child? I don’t know how to do it.” Perhaps you have not been taught, you have not seen good examples of how to do this. We want to help and equip you in this great responsibility.

Parenting is not an easy task. It takes patience and discipline. So we must be intentional. It is essential for a child to be taught about the right path they can walk in good ways and fulfill the purpose for which they were created. To train a child is a very broad experience, including school but also, and most important, faith and trust.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Gospel of John 14:6

The true way and instruction is found only in the Word of God. Of course, to train a child is not limited to their faith. But the reality is that we can try to do it in our own way, using the best methods and strategies. And it could work for a moment. But for you to train your child to be successful in life and fulfilling their purpose, you need to help them to know the Word of God.

As we saw, Jesus is the way, the right path, the truth and the life! In Jesus we find wisdom and discernment that we need to teach our children more than school subjects. No matter how many years you have studied at school. Invite Jesus to your home, end enjoy the abundant life that He has available for you and your family!

Prayer: Father, I thank you for your love and grace to me. I ask your help to take advantage of this period of crisis to lead my children and family closer to you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
