Bad News is Nosy
Sooner or later they appear. Unwanted, unpleasant, bad news is part of everyone’s life. At that moment, we need the firmness that can only be gained in one place, in the presence of God.
“Believe in the Lord your God, and you will be established;
2 Chronicles 20:20b
believe his prophets, and you will succeed.”
King Jehoshaphat
During the reign of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, armies of neighboring nations gathered to declare war against him. The messengers informed that the troops coming to attack him were large and already close.
Faced with this bad news, Jehoshaphat’s attitude made all the difference to the outcome of that episode in the history of his people. The Bible says he was terrified and decided to consult the Lord immediately.
In those times when we don’t even know where to begin and what to do, we should go to God’s presence in prayer with thanksgiving and look to Him. And that attitude of trust is like a ticket to the solution.
Absolute Priority of a Plan Against Bad News
When our plans are interrupted by bad news, it is not wrong to seek support from our faithful family and friends. But the absolute priority must be our going to God’s presence to wait for His Word and then take the next step.
The Bible says that God is close to all who seek Him with a broken heart. It doesn’t matter if you feel that he is close or not. Nor if you think you are worthy of asking for his help. God is near and wants to help you whenever you need his guidance and grace to go on — that is, always.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Psalms 46:1
Overcoming Bad News by God’s Word
At the time when Jehoshaphat sought the Lord, a prophet named Jaaziel was sent to proclaim God’s guidance. And following her, the people of Judah had a miraculous victory.
Note that it is the wisdom of God to send apostles and prophets to solve complex problems. Our part is to seek God’s presence, and await his guidance there. And the way God usually acts is by asking us to relax, trusting Him while He takes over.
“And the fear of God came on all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel. So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his God gave him rest all around.”
2 Chronicles 20:29-30
Conclusion
Trust in the Lord God, and you will be established, standing firm and honored. Trust his prophets, people who truly bring God’s word into your life, and you will have complete victory. Nothing will stop your plans from succeeding if you trust God and His Word.
Prayer: God, I recognize that You are good and your love endures forever. Please help me find out how to access your presence and trust in You so that all your plans for my life and family will be successful. I ask in faith and give you thanks in the name of Jesus. Amen.
